Our goal in our first-ever Classic race was simply to get a result.
We didn't.
We got TWO results!
Mac Quang Nhan battled in a group of four for third place on the final climb and settled for fifth, which is his best performance ever.
"I have to say, my confidence soared when I was given the captaincy," said the Vietnamese rider. "It was a surprise. Piet (Winters) and Troy (Harrison) have wins this year and have been our main two, so for the team to show that kind of confidence in me today, that was huge. And credit to those two guys, they didn't get the glory today but they did a lot of work to make this happen."
Sorin Adam also had a career day, surprising many with his eighth-place effort.
"It surprised me as much as anyone," the Romanian rider said. "Never felt better on the bike. You hit that final climb and some guys you expect to do well don't have it, and some guys you don't expect are stronger. It was my day."
Team manager Dan Kauffman was elated with the effort.
"It shows the depth of our squad, that two guys who really hadn't gotten a lot of credit for our success this year are the two who grab the glory today," Kauffman said. "Obviously Piet and Troy have had great years and we wouldn't be in Division 6 and in this race without them. But we are more than those two, we have a solid group of guys and they can all lead when asked, and they can all come up big and get results.
"Piet and Troy were great today. I'm sure they were disappointed a bit not to get the captain's nod but they took it like pros and did their jobs. All of them trained brilliantly for this race, they knew it was a big opportunity and they took advantage of it. I think it speaks well of our future."
Kauffman said the team will start preparations for Season 47.
"Unfortunately the couple climbing races left this year have already been filled, or we may have tried one of them," he said. "That's OK. This is a fitting cap to our first season and we'll give the guys a nice break and attack next year with enthusiasm."
